The Minister of Education, Hon Matthew Opoku Prempeh, announced that the Government of Ghana has given his ministry a financial clearance to recruit about 27,000 teaching and non-teaching staff in the year 2020.
The Education Minister commended the government effort of recruiting a total number of 93,724 staff into the pre-tertiary sector since 2017. He also stated that the government has employed 6,178 staff into the Tertiary level.
Hon Opoku Prempeh further disclosed that all the teachers that were recruited last year have been put on the payroll.
He stated that Ghana National Research Bill is laid before parliament and the government has acknowledged the role of UTAG played in making the bill better.
The Minister also said that the government has nothing to hide in advocating for public university bill and that academic freedom will be enshrined in the bill. He urged people to send their memorandum to make the bill a better one.
He revealed that the Government has approved the increase of Research allowance from Ghs500 to Ghs1,500 making it a 200 % increment.
Dr Opoku Prempeh further disclosed that the Government has agreed and aligned with the concerns of the teacher unions and has deleted the Decentralization Clauses from the Pre-Tertiary Education Bill before parliament.
