A voice recording of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Chairman for Berekum East in the Bono Region, Stephen Kwaku Kankam , being assaulted by some party polling station members, has emerged on the various social medial platforms.
The incident took place on the 15th of June, 2020 around 8pm at Kutre electoral area in Berekum Municipality ahead of Saturday NPP parliamentary aspirants elections.
According Chairman Kankam, when spoken to on the phone, he revealed that, he went to the area to deny a claim which involved Ghs300,000 cash payment by the incumbent MP for Berekum East, Dr Twum-Nuamah to the delegates but ended up being assaulted by some polling station members, which he suspected , are the supporters of Mr Nelson Kyeremeh, one the aspirants . He said it was police patrol team which intervened and rescued him.
In the course of the interview, Mr Kankam, was captured making allegation that, Mr Nelson Kyeremeh was also prepared to pay Ghc100,000 to the delegates to make his way through on the 20th June. He believed these polling station members who took that action against him are from Nelson camp.
“ they really insulted and in the course of explaining myself to them , they assaulted ,” I know them all, they are all polling station agents..
Chairman Kankam told Obra TV reporter, Yaw Sarpong that, he will not report the incident to the Police, simply because the case will definitely not be investigated or interrogated as the camp which organised that incident have COP Nana Asomah Hinneh as their strong man to defend them.
Some party executives are unhappy with the fact that, if this assault can happen to the constituency chairman, then it can happen to all of them too at anytime and therefore they will also take their personal security very serious.
Obra TV reporter, spoke to the constituency Youth organiser, Mr Yaw Frimpong, who blamed and held Mr Nelson Kyeremeh camp responsible for the incident, The Youth Organiser further stated that, he will press the constituency Chairman to take further action by reporting it to the police.
However, He equally stated that due to the fact that, COP Nana Asomah Hinneh has huge influence in the Police sector, the case will not reach anywhere but he would have wanted the law to take its course.
Meanwhile, effort to reach Mr Nelson to deny the claim levelled against his camp has not yielded any results.
